My Mother Taught Me

My mother taught me gold

And brought me up to see it

Beyond the constraints of a small home

And through my actions, believe it

My mother taught me blue

Both bright and dim

Dulled by worry and wear

To work past sore

Give all you can and care

My mother reached for peace of mind

Through sacrificial rest

She didn’t find

My mother taught me black

Through all her work

And little back
