Practice Run

A pair bought new

Is a pair fresh from the factory

Smells of leather, plastic, cardboard even

They have not been outside their shell

They are mere replacements

For the pair before

The pair that had gone through hell and back

Each and every day

Forced to pound the hard cement

And sink in the mud

Forced to slosh through snow

Sleet and rain alike

Worn every day through everything

This pair would soon

Fall apart at the seams

They could bear the pain no more

Carrying such heavyweight

Through unforgiving territory

Their muscles wore and torn

Their skin grew wrinkled and blotched

Some wounds near the most stressed

The most abused parts

Finally the pair had no more to give

No longer able to bear the weight
