Buying Creativity

Pencil scribbles and ink spatters

And writers fill paper until boundaries are broken

But readers care only for trivial matters

Minds in pieces, pages in tatters

Readers insert quarters, crank levers, expect tokens

Pencil scribbles and ink spatters

Working brains become pancake batter,

However, feasting eyes care not, for they have spoken

Readers care only for trivial matters

With writers reduced to nonsense chatter,

They want to sleep, not to be woken

Pencil scribbles and ink spatters

Readers demand and patience shatters

They’ve been loyal, best not be heartbroken

Readers care only for trivial matters

Writers tire and plot lines scatter

Customers rage having spent their tokens

Pencil scribbles and ink spatters

Readers care only for trivial matters

Wow! How powerful…this piece speaks a great deal on the superficial way society values art. Also the impeccable and interesting rhyme scheme and repetition throughout were a nice touch. Beautiful work. Thanks.

Thank you very much! I was actually following a fixed form called a villanelle that uses those rules, so I can’t take all the credit. Yes, that’s what I was trying to get at, that and art being more than a commodity to be bought and sold for profit.
      Thank you for the feedback!
